Geography & Atmosphere
The world here is defined by an ocean of grain, a sprawling tapestry of amber and gold that stretches to the horizon, broken only by the colossal, moss-strewn walls that cradle the city like a protective god. The air is thick with the scent of sun-baked wheat, damp earth, and the sweet, fermentation-heavy drift of orchards in full bloom. Wind moves through the crops in great, shivering waves, creating a constant, hushing sibilance that underpins the distant lowing of oxen and the rhythmic clatter of wagons navigating the vast, terraced thoroughfares. It is a place of aggressive abundance, where the sheer scale of life and harvest feels overwhelming, a testament to civilization’s triumph over the wild North.
Inside the walls, the atmosphere shifts from pastoral to industrial divinity. Giant water wheels churn in the canals, and the architecture is a sturdy marriage of practicality and worship; granaries are built like cathedrals, with stained glass depicting harvest moons and cornucopias. As evening falls, the “Granary of the North” glows with a warm, lantern-lit haziness, the dust of the threshing floor catching the last rays of the sun, turning the very air into suspended gold. Despite its beauty, there is a rigid order here—every stalk counted, every acre manicured—lending the city a feeling of holding its breath, a fortress of plenty standing defiant against the hungry wilds beyond.
History
Once celebrated as the “Granary of the North,” Goldenfields was a sprawling agricultural metropolis that fed Waterdeep and much of the Sword Coast. Its landscape was an ocean of amber grain, protected by massive walls and the vigilant Garrison. It stood as a testament to the union of nature and civilization, a place of aggressive abundance and peace blessed by Chauntea.
That era ended in fire during Session 3 when Lazarus’s forces breached the defenses and razed the city to the ground.
Current State
The golden fields have been reduced to scorched earth, the cathedral-granaries are smoking ruins, and the population has been scattered or slain. The city now stands only as a grim monument to the beginning of the war, its abundance turned to ash. Elric Lightborn witnessed its destruction and has left for Waterdeep.
