Narrative Summary

Elric returns to Waterdeep after negotiating the release of Kate and Lyra from Matron Malice. While walking through the market district, he is engaged in a psychic “Battle of Wills” by rival Progenitors Pyre and Nirek. This Progenitor dominance display—a test of mental strength rather than physical combat—leaves Elric matched against Pyre, son of Solarin and the deceased Ember. The confrontation is interrupted by Phobos and his companion Naya, and ultimately dispersed by a warning thunderbolt from Ikaran.

Later, Elric is lured into a trap by Solarin himself, who has imprisoned Bean within a fire cage intended to birth a Primal Fire Elemental. The “Bean” in the cage was fake—a magical trap. Elric successfully seals the elemental’s magic, suffering horrific burns in the process, but saves the city from catastrophic destruction. The magical backlash kills 64 civilians, including 12 children. However, Bean’s death within the elemental fire causes her to be reborn as a powerful Sheed—a phoenix-winged member of the Wild Court with a natural Charisma of 29.

Confronted by the Seven Wands of Waterdeep for the magical disturbance, Elric is bailed out by Ikaran, who intimidates the Wands and teleports Elric to Undermountain. There, Elric meets Lycus, a mysterious Progenitor hunter with a half-metal face who agrees to train him for the coming conflicts. Elric then teleports to Basque to complete his mission for Corell, gifting him the Mythic Trident. In exchange, he receives citizenship, a four-story townhouse, and information on the Legacy Set—a collection of artifacts from six legendary dark casters including his father Varrakis.

During the meeting in Basque, Elric spots Bones enslaved with a collar alongside the Earl of Scripps, a high-ranking Pit Fiend. Bones covertly leaves a message: “Find the legacy set.” Upon returning to Waterdeep, Elric discovers that Bean has split into a duality—a fire aspect (Spirit of Waterdeep) and an ice aspect (Spirit of Skullport)—who immediately begin fighting each other.
